Musk’s xAI raises $20 billion Series E; Where Does AGI Stand?

Artificial general intelligence

The race for artificial general intelligence (AGI) heats up as Silicon Valley balances high-stakes optimism with industrial realism.

January 7, 2026: Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has raised $20 billion in its latest funding round, surpassing the $15 billion targeted round size, stated xAI on Tuesday. Investors include NVIDIA and Cisco Investments, along with Valor Equity Partners, Stepstone Group, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Qatar Investment Authority, MGX, and Baron Capital Group.

For the record, Cisco and Nvidia work with xAI reportedly as vendors and strategic partners.

xAI dubbed 2025 “a year of breakthrough momentum.” The startup purportedly ended the year with more than one million H100 GPU equivalents. xAI is expanding its compute advantage with the world’s largest AI supercomputers at Colossus I and II. However, the data centers have received flak for emissions that have augmented the air quality problems in the area, cited CNBC, quoting local researchers.

Silicon Valley Rallies on AGI

With the race for artificial general intelligence (AGI)—a hypothetical stage where machines match human-level intelligence— heating up, the funding, people in the know expect, could spur the growth of Grok-5, striving to surpass the capabilities of GPT-5 or equivalent models.

Meanwhile, in November 2025, Anthropic was valued at around $350 billion, with capital emanating from Nvidia and Microsoft. Interestingly, Anthropic’s president, Daniela Amodei is not too optimistic about AGI. She has apparently termed AGI as “outdated.”

This comes against the backdrop of the AGI optimism. In December last year, Musk suggested that AGI could be achieved by xAI as early as 2026. Google DeepMind’s CEO, Demis Hassabis, opines that AGI is five to ten years away, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is bullish on building AGI. Industry experts believe companies will continue to bet big on computing power and new models as the global AI market revenue is projected to reach USD 3,497.26 billion by 2033 and xAI strives to bridge the gap with its rivals, including Gemini and ChatGPT.
