The Indian government is set to launch a nationwide free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign targeting adolescent girls this year to combat cervical cancer. The program will provide voluntary vaccinations to girls, specifically focusing on those around age 14, through various government health facilities. These centers include Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, community health centers, and district hospitals, ensuring the vaccine is accessible to the general public.
This initiative is also expected to significantly influence the cervical cancer diagnostics market by increasing early prevention and public health awareness across all states.
Health Ministry sources stated that all sessions will be “conducted under the supervision of trained medical officers” to ensure safety. Systems are also being established for post-vaccination observation and the management of any rare adverse events that may occur.
India will utilize the quadrivalent Gardasil vaccine, which provides protection against HPV types 16 and 18, the primary causes of cervical cancer. This rollout follows a rigorous scientific evaluation and recommendations provided by the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTAGI).
Cervical cancer remains a critical health issue, ranking as the second most common cancer among women in India with 80,000 new cases annually. Officials noted that persistent infection with high-risk HPV strains “accounts for over 80% of cervical cancer cases in the country.”
Vaccine supplies have been secured through a globally supported procurement mechanism in partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. This collaboration ensures that all administered doses meet strict international regulatory and cold-chain standards for maximum efficacy.
